Power, Smotherman to play off for title at weather-hit Bermuda Championship

Seamus Power and Austin Smotherman will play off for the Bermuda Championship title on Monday after inclement weather forced officials to cancel the scheduled final round of the US PGA Tour event.

Organisers had tried to get Sunday's scheduled final round under way early but ended up cancelling play for the day as winds gusted up to 40 miles per hour and the weather deteriorated.

Hours after that decision was made, the tour announced that in view of the poor forecast for Monday officials had decided not to try to play a full round.

"Due to the unfavorable weather forecast for Monday at the Butterfield Bermuda Championship and the uncertainty surrounding the completion of the entire round on Monday, the tournament results will be considered final through 54 holes in accordance with PGA Tour regulations," the tour said in a statement.

"A playoff between Seamus Power and Austin Smotherman will be conducted to determine the champion," the statement said.

Smotherman carded a five-under par 66 on Saturday for a 16-under par total of 197.

He's trying to add his second title of the month after lifting his maiden PGA Tour trophy at the Utah Championship three weeks ago.

He was joined by Ireland's Power, whose four-under 67 on Saturday included a birdie at the wind-blown 17th that pulled him level with Smotherman atop the leaderboard.

The leading duo were two strokes clear of American Taylor Moore and Canadians Corey Conners and Ben Silverman, who all finished 54 holes at 14-under par. — AFP
