‘A Man On The Inside’ To End With Season 3; Netflix Comedy Starring Ted Danson Sets Returning Cast, Guest Stars & New Mystery As Production Starts

Ted Danson‘s Charles Nieuwendyk is (almost) done sleuthing. Mike Schur‘s A Man on the Inside will come to a conclusion with its upcoming third — and now final — season, which has started production in San Francisco, California, Netflix announced on Wednesday. Returning alongside Danson for Season 3 is the comedy’s main cast, including Mary Elizabeth Ellis, Lilah Richcreek Estrada, Stephanie Beatriz and Mary Steenburgen, as well as three recurring players who have been on the show since Season 1, Sally Struthers, Eugene Cordero and Stephen McKinley Henderson.

Along with the announcement, Netflix revealed the new Season 3 recurring cast, which sets a Parks and Recreation reunion, and the new case newly minted PI Charles (Danson) will be taking on. He is hired by Coco Van Beck, the Grand Dame of San Francisco society, to find whoever is trying to sabotage her philanthropic work.

Coco is being played by Tony winner Bernadette Peters (The Debut). Most of the new recurring characters are connected to her.

That includes Jack Spencer, one of Coco’s employees who takes a special interest in Charles’ investigation. He will be played by Nick Offerman (Margo’s Got Money Troubles), former star of NBC’s Parks and Recreation, which was co-created and executive produced by Schur.

Additionally, Annette O’Toole (Virgin River) will play Kitt, a fixture in San Francisco high society, and one of Coco’s oldest friends.

Christopher McDonald (Hacks) will play Leland, a playboy vineyard owner and Coco’s third ex-husband.

Diedrich Bader (Better Things) will play Mark Delaurio, a powerful real estate developer who has clashed with Coco many times in the past.

Rachel Dratch (Saturday Night Live) will play Maud, Coco’s harried assistant who sleeps three hours a night and has three phones going at all times.

Stephen Root, fresh off his Emmy win for Widow’s Bay, will play Dave, Charles’s estranged brother, who has some old scores to settle.

And Jessica St. Clair (The Studio) will play Chloe, a friend of Emily’s (Mary Elizabeth Ellis) who helps her navigate a new phase in parenthood.

While A Man On the Inside is set in San Francisco, the series had been filmed largely in Los Angeles for its first two seasons with occasional SF location shoots. The majority of the third and final season will be shot in San Francisco where cameras started rolling on Monday.

In his statement about the end of A Man on the Inside, Schur is referencing the show’s original premise: Charles (Danson), a retired man, gets a new lease on life when he answers an ad from a PI and becomes a mole in a secret investigation.

“This series began with a retiree taking a chance at a new life,” Schur said. “By answering a help wanted ad and venturing out into the world, Charles Nieuwendyk made his world bigger and proved that life only slows down if you let it. We are thrilled to be able to conclude his journey with one final chapter, as embodied by the great Ted Danson, who I am legally required to refer to as a ‘National Treasure.’”

While the announcement that A Man On the Inside is ending comes now, that was believed to be part of the Season 3 renewal unveiled in early February, allowing Schur and his team to craft the new installment as a final chapter. (With that in mind Danson already has moved on; he stars in Elizabeth Banks’ new Apple TV comedy series.)

The development is not surprising.

After a breakout 2024 series debut and quick renewal, Season 2 of A Man on the Inside did not crack Netflix’s weekly Top 10 for English series as it ran into the buzzsaw of Stranger Things‘ final season. (Season 1 spent five weeks in the Top 5 in a less competitive time frame, opening at No.1.)

In Netflix’s What We Watched semi-annual report on July – December 2025 viewership, Season 2 of A Man on the Inside ranked No. 131 with 9.8M views following its Nov. 20 premiere. For comparison, Season 1 was No. 30 for July-Dec. 2024 with 21.6M views over a virtually identical window having released on Nov. 21, 2024. That’s a drop of 55%. Audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes also has slipped from 90% for Season 1 to 69% for Season 2.

However, audiences also have continued to discover or rewatch the comedy, with Season 1 adding another 5.9M views in the second half of 2025, more than half of the Season 2 delivery. According to Netflix, the combined tally of both seasons through H1 2026 is over 51 million views.
