Pornanong Phatlum’s victory on Sunday not only helped her end an 11-year title drought on the professional tour but also gave her renewed motivation to continue playing. The 36-year-old Thai was visibly emotional after her fourth Women’s Indian Open title at the DLF Golf and Country Club.

“This title means a lot to me. I almost retired from professional golf this year but winning again gives me more motivation. I feel like I can still play on the tour and I’ll try my best again next year,” Pornanong, who came as a sponsor invitee for the event, admitted.

“I didn’t think I was going to win again but I tried my best. This was a fantastic round for me. Every putt on the front nine dropped in the hole. Today feels incredible. Everything went in and I got up and down really well too. I think they just wanted me to win again,” she added.

Vani Kapoor, who led going into the final day and stayed level before slipping, was disappointed but insisted there was little she could do. “I gave it my best, my 100 per cent, and everything went according to plan. I don’t think I could have done anything more.

“I made a lot of birdies, especially considering the amount of pressure there was. I don’t think I would have made so many birdies in a single round before. I made a couple of mistakes too, but that’s part of the game. It’s better to accept it,” she shrugged.
