"Memorable" crime drama debuts with 100% Rotten Tomatoes rating

Translate

Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother, the crime drama starring Mahershala Ali and Giancarlo Esposito, has debuted with a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes following its world premiere.

The film sees Ali portray Latif, a devoutly religious figure who works as a hitman. He is soon thrust into danger as his children's lives are at risk, and he travels across Houston to protect them as enemy forces close in.

Written and directed by Bassim Tariq, the film boasts a stacked supporting cast including John Cho, Tramell Tillman, Abubakr Ali, Tiffany Boone and Laith Nakli. Tariq, who previously directed Mogul Mowgli, also serves as a producer.

The crime drama, which is being distributed worldwide by Amazon MGM Studios, had its world premiere at the 51st Toronto International Film Festival on Saturday (12 September) and it has been acclaimed by critics thus far.

At the time of writing, Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother has a perfect approval rating of 100% from 17 reviews, though that could of course drop when the film is released theatrically in the US later this month.

You can read a selection of reviews below:

IndieWire

"Messy contradictions and eccentric side characters drive this memorable story of a devout Muslim hitman played by Mahershala Ali."

Vulture

"Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother is a film about faith, grief, fatherhood, and stabbing people to death, and it whips ass in a way that makes its origin story feel downright serendipitous."

Screen International

"By reimagining the action hero through a specifically Muslim lens, Tariq has redefined the genre into something more introspective and compassionate, rapturous and revelatory."

The Jam Report

"Tariq and Ali have delivered an absolute banger. A bruising, beautiful piece of cinema that thrills the senses while leaving considerably more behind than a trail of bodies."

TheWrap

"Achingly rooted in the tribulations of this world, director Bassam Tariq's Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother takes the trappings and tropes of the hitman story and baptizes it with spiritual sensibilities."

The Guardian

"[It] is its own beautiful singular thing, partly a stylish and pulpy neo-western thriller about a father racked with guilt, navigating violence that comes heavy and uneasy, but first and foremost a drama about a family reconciling their Muslim faith with their actions, their environments and their grief."

Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother is released in the US on 25 September, before coming to the UK and Ireland on 20 November.
