A bus crash at a tourist hotspot in Egypt has killed 16 people and left 28 others injured.

The accident happened this morning on the Dahab-Nuweibaa road on South Sinai's eastern coast, the health ministry said.

Twenty ambulances attended the crash to provide medical care to those injured, while authorities are yet to confirm what caused the collision.

The area is a popular tourist destination, known for its marine biodiversity, natural beauty and mountain hiking trails.

Car crashes are common in Egypt, and are often blamed on reckless driving, poor maintenance and uneven law enforcement.

Last year, nearly 6,000 people died in road accidents across the country, according to Egypt's state statistics agency.

Last month, 15 people were killed and 32 injured in a road accident in Egypt's Ismailia Governorate.

The accident happened this morning on the road between the popular towns of Dahab and Nuweiba on South Sinai's eastern coast
