The Future Of Game Of Thrones Spinoffs Gets Direct Response From HBO CEO

The future of Game of Thrones on HBO gets a clarifying response.

For now, at least, George R. R. Martin's adaptations remain a cornerstone of HBO's programming. On one end, there's the recent debut of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, which expertly veers into comedy thanks to the pitch-perfect odd-couple pairing of Dunk (played by Peter Claffey) and Egg, who is portrayed by young actor Dexter Sol Ansell.

On the opposite end, there's the warry prequel House of the Dragon, which will wrap with its upcoming fourth installment. Beyond that, there are rumors and murmurs about what the next Game of Thrones spinoffs could be once the current series conclude their runs.

In an interview with Deadline to celebrate HBO's 21 wins at the recent Primetime Emmys, as well as preview what's next, top executive Casey Bloys was asked about whether there might be any more Game of Thrones spinoffs in the pipeline besides Seven Kingdoms and House of the Dragon. Bloys, who is the Chairman and CEO of HBO and Max Content, is fairly direct about the fact that there are no other spinoffs currently planned. Read his quote below:

You mean in addition to the Emmy-nominated Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, which is coming out in the first half of ’27? And House of the Dragon? Besides that, no, nothing else.

Bloys' brief but straightforward response comes amid renewed speculation that Maisie Williams is set to reprise her role as Arya Stark in a GoT sequel, potentially reuniting with on-screen sibling Kit Harington as part of the long-discussed Jon Snow spinoff. Williams recently addressed this possibility and indicated that she was not in line for an Arya reprisal.

Williams speculated about whether audiences would even be invested in an older version of Arya, explaining her view that the character's breakout appeal stemmed in part from the fact that she was a child doing extraordinary things over the course of her arc. She said in part: “I feel like what people loved about Arya is that she was always a child doing things that were quite grown-up.”

Perhaps that is a signal of why, at least on television, the objective has been to focus on other parts of the franchise rather than serving up a more expected direct sequel. It could be an implicit acknowledgement from the cast, crew, and executives that the original Game of Thrones has such a significant legacy that any direct sequel would need to be perfect to get picked up, especially considering the original's divisive finale.

It could be, as well, that there are talks about where to go next with Game of Thrones, but nothing definitive and nothing worth taking the focus away from the current spinoffs that are still active. In any case, the next Westeros story won't be on TV, but it will be on the big screen for the first time. That's Aegon's Conquest, a prequel from Andor writer Beau Williamson.
