Warning: contains spoilers for Star Trek: The Last Starship #11!

Star Trek has confirmed the last love interest of Captain Kirk, and it is a legacy character that no one expected. IDW Publishing’s Star Trek: The Last Starship has brought the Starfleet legend into the 30th century, to help heal a galaxy that has just been devastated by an unspeakable tragedy. Along the way, Kirk met new faces, new enemies and new lovers.

Writers Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly have written many other Star Trek comics for IDW.

Written by Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly, and drawn by Adrian Bonilla and Hernan Gonzalez, Star Trek: The Last Starship is set at the time of “the Burn,” which caused all the galaxy’s dilithium to explode. As a result, the Federation and every other major galactic power fell. Chaos reigned, and salvation came from a most unlikely source: Agnes Jurati, the Queen of the Borg Cooperative, introduced in Picard’s second season. Using advanced Borg tech, she revived Captain Kirk, hoping to use him as a rallying point to restore order.

Star Trek: The Last Starship celebrates Kirk’s legacy as a hero and an icon.

Star Trek: The Last Starship celebrates Kirk’s legacy as a hero and an icon. The book weaponizes this legacy, using it as a desperate, “Hail Mary” attempt to maintain order and inspire hope. Kirk was also an excellent diplomat and tactician, and The Last Starship acknowledges these traits as well, while also shining a light on another of the captain’s most prominent personality traits.

Captain Kirk Finds Love One Last Time, With The Most Unlikely Partner

In Star Trek: The Last Starship #11, Lanzing, Kelly and Bonilla take readers to the final confrontation between Starfleet and the forces of the Emerald Chain. Starfleet is coming together at Space Station Deep Space Hope, but the Chain is on its way to intercept them. Starfleet’s plan is to evacuate people from the galaxy to somewhere safe, but the Chain sees it as its chance to rid itself of an enemy once and for all.

Star Trek Kirk Final Love Interest

As the Omega opens the Gate to allow the starships through, Kirk shares a moment with the woman who returned him to life: Agnes Jurati. The pair watch the scene unfold around them, while sharing a tender moment. Kirk waxes philosophical about the impending battle, all while holding Jurati’s hands, before finally kissing her.

Captain Kirk Had Many Lovers In His Day

Carol Marcus in Star Trek II- The Wrath of Khan and Carol Marcus in Star Trek Into Darkness

In his days as captain of the Enterprise, Kirk had many romances and liaisons. Some of his more famous pairings were with Doctor Carol Marcus, whom he met while at the Academy and would be the mother of his son David, as well as Edith Keeler from “City on the Edge of Forever.” Kirk had a romantic partner of some kind shortly before he disappeared into the Nexus, as seen in Star Trek: Generations. This is to say nothing of the casual flings and one-night stands Kirk had.

Yet his new relationship, with Agnes Jurati, is perhaps the most surprising of them all. Jurati is the Borg Queen, albeit a more benign one. Still, the Borg’s legacy is one of evil and dehumanization, concepts Kirk would find repulsive, and would seemingly make an alliance untenable. It is a testament to Kirk’s judgment of character that he was able to get through to Agnes, and establish the necessary deep connection.

Issue 11 is the penultimate chapter of The Last Starship. Kirk is almost certain to perish or be seriously injured in the fighting to come next issue, meaning Jurati may very well be his final love interest. Kirk’s new relationship with Jurati is coming right as the Star Trek universe is facing its darkest hour, and while the captain carries the weight of the galaxy on his shoulders. Jurati has given Kirk one last Star Trek romance, and it might be the biggest shock of his storied career.
