Broncos remain confident in OC Webb as playcaller despite Week 1 loss

The Denver Broncos maintain a "high level of confidence and comfort" in Davis Webb as their offensive playcaller, a team source told ESPN.

The Broncos struggled in their season debut under Webb as offensive coordinator last Monday in Kansas City, managing just 176 yards from scrimmage in their 31-10 loss to the Chiefs.

But Broncos head coach Sean Payton continues to support Webb and stand by the first-year offensive coordinator, believing he will be a successful playcaller.

Payton defended Webb last week, saying the Broncos' entire offensive operation should shoulder some blame for Monday's performance.

"I think that game didn't go for any of us as we would've hoped," Payton said Thursday. "Right? I mean, I said in the meeting this morning: there was dirt on a ton of people's hands, starting with me.

"So we've got to learn from that. It's a quick turnaround, you can't get to the next game quick enough, and I'm sure it's the same way for [Webb]."

Webb emerged as a head coaching candidate this past offseason and interviewed for open positions with the Las Vegas Raiders, Buffalo Bills and Baltimore Ravens. He also had opportunities to become an offensive coordinator on other teams, according to sources.

The Broncos ultimately kept Webb, promoting him from quarterbacks coach to offensive coordinator in February.

Broncos quarterback Bo Nix struggled mightily in Kansas City, fumbling three times (losing one) and throwing an interception while also being sacked a career-high four times.

Nix was asked Thursday what Denver's offense needed to do to make it easier on Webb in Week 2. The third-year quarterback paused briefly and got right to the point: "Get first downs, score points.''

The Broncos return home in Week 2 to host the Jacksonville Jaguars, who rolled to a 34-20 victory last season in Denver.
