Why the next few weeks could be crucial for Orlando Pirates

Orlando Pirates will have the chance to win their fifth successive MTN8 trophy when they face Mamelodi Sundowns in the final on 10 October.

The Buccaneers have reached yet another MTN8 final and are targeting their 10th trophy in six years. Under Abdeslam Ouaddou, Pirates enjoyed a hugely successful 2025/26 campaign, winning a treble.

With more than 10 new players brought into the squad, the Sea Robbers are clearly aiming to strengthen their challenge not only domestically but also on the African continent.

However, continental competition remains an area Pirates will be desperate to improve in.

Last season, the Buccaneers were eliminated in the second preliminary round of the CAF Champions League, losing to Saint Eloi Lupopo. They face another preliminary-round tie this season, with Namibian side African Stars standing in their way.

Orlando Pirates have now been eliminated at the preliminary stage of the CAF Champions League on five occasions, making progression against African Stars particularly important.

History, however, suggests that getting beyond that hurdle can set Pirates up for a strong run in the competition. The Buccaneers will therefore be determined to avoid another early exit and finally make their mark in Africa.

Before they turn their attention fully to their two-legged Champions League tie against African Stars, Pirates must first deal with Sundowns in the MTN8 final.

Orlando Pirates need to continue with good form

The timing of the fixture means Ouaddou will also be keeping a close eye on his players during the international break. Several Pirates stars are away with their respective national teams, and the coach will hope they return to club duty without injuries.

Nkosinathi Sibisi was ruled out of Bafana Bafana’s match against Guinea because of injury, although reports suggested he could be available for the matches against Eritrea and Egypt.

For Orlando Pirates, the next few weeks could therefore prove significant. An MTN8 victory would extend their remarkable dominance in the competition, while successfully navigating the Champions League preliminary round would give them the platform to pursue their ambitions on the continent.
