Game of Thrones movie based on Aegon's Conquest finally gets cinema release date from HBO

The Dance of Dragons may be nearing its end, but more Targaryen tales are on their way as the Game of Thrones movie Aegon's Conquest officially has a release date.

In true Thrones fashion, fans are going to have to be very patient, with the release date being confirmed as 6 June 2029. Mark your calendars!

The screenplay is by Beau Willimon (known for developing and serving as showrunner on House of Cards, and writing on Andor), while Owen Harris (who has worked on A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms) will be directing.

Aegon's Conquest is thought to be set centuries before the original Game of Thrones, and to focus on Aegon I, the founder of the Targaryen dynasty, who conquered Westeros with his three dragons, Balerion, Vhagar and Meraxes.

Aegon also founded the city of King's Landing, and forged the iconic Iron Throne from the swords of his defeated enemies, which he had melted with dragonfire.

Paving the way for the Targaryens' incestuous legacy, he married both of his sisters, Visenya and Rhaenys. His descendants ruled for three centuries.

Based on the A Song of Ice and Fire Books by George RR Martin, it's the latest project to build out the world of Westeros, following on from TV series Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, and the play The Mad King.

While we embark on the long wait for Aegon's Conquest, fans will be able to enjoy A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 2, which is set to arrive in early 2027, and the final season of House of the Dragon, which is coming our way in 2028.

Previously speaking to Radio Times about more potential spin-offs, HBO boss Casey Bloys said: "We kind of take an individual approach. I don’t like to make any decisions ahead of time, like 'we need so many spin-offs' because I think when you do that, you put yourself in a position where you may compromise."

He continued: "I like to do it on a script-by-script basis."

Meanwhile, although a proposed Jon Snow prequel series was previously scrapped, Kit Harington has suggested that he would now be "comfortable" reprising the role – so watch this space!
Aegon's Conquest will arrive in cinemas on 6 June 2029.
