Prabowo seeks to double Indonesia-Russia trade via I-EAEU FTA

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has proposed doubling the trade value between Indonesia and Russia through the Indonesia-Eurasian Economic Union Free Trade Agreement (I-EAEU FTA).

“I propose that Indonesia and Russia set a clear challenge for ourselves: to double our trade volume during the initial review period of the Indonesia-Eurasian Economic Union Free Trade Agreement,” Prabowo said at the 11th Eastern Economic Forum (EEF) in Vladivostok, Russia, Thursday.

Prabowo noted that the trade value between Indonesia and Russia reached approximately US$5 billion in 2025, marking a 21.7 percent increase compared to 2024.

According to him, the trade growth can be driven by the complementary nature of the two nations' economies. Implementation of the free trade agreement is scheduled to begin in 2027.

Prabowo hopes that the implementation of the agreement will strengthen ties between Indonesia, Russia, and the member states of the Eurasian Economic Union.

"For the Eurasian business community, Indonesia serves as a natural gateway to ASEAN. We are the region's largest market, a central player in the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), and now, a free trade partner," he said.

Regarding bilateral trade relations, Prabowo highlighted that both Indonesia and Russia possess strengths in their respective sectors.

Indonesia, he noted, offers commodities such as palm oil, coffee, fishery products, rubber, textiles, and consumer goods, alongside a young workforce.

Indonesia also acts as a gateway to the ASEAN market, which comprises a population of approximately 680 million people.

Meanwhile, Russia boasts key strengths in sectors such as wheat, fertilizers, energy, science, and engineering technology.

"The strength of one party can meet the needs of the other. This forms the foundation for fair and sustainable trade," Prabowo said.

Prabowo delivered a speech as the main guest of honor at the 11th Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok, Russia, on Thursday.

In his address, Prabowo expressed his gratitude to Russian President Vladimir Putin and the Russian government for the honor of speaking at the forum.

Prabowo stated that this visit to Russia is his second in 2026. He also noted that he has met with Putin five times since becoming President of Indonesia.
