Indonesia, Malaysia agree to boost Entikong-Tebedu border trade

Indonesia and Malaysia have agreed to strengthen cross-border trade through Entikong in Sanggau District, West Kalimantan, and Tebedu in Malaysia’s Sarawak, which share a land border.

"We shared the commitment for an effective implementation of the Border Trade Agreement and the sustainable way to facilitate border trade and support economy connectivity, especially in the Entikong-Tebedu border," Indonesian Trade Minister Budi Santoso said in a press conference on Thursday.

The minister said that the commitment is one of the outcomes from the 4th Indonesia-Malaysia Joint Trade and Investment Committee (JTIC) with Malaysian Investment, Trade, and Industry Minister Johari Abdul Ghani at the Trade Ministry Office in Jakarta.

Santoso said that strengthening border trade is among various strategies pursued to ensure bilateral cooperation and trade bring concrete benefits to the people.

Indonesia-Malaysia JITC is a bilateral forum to discuss issues, challenges, and opportunities in trade and investment sectors, as well as resolve outstanding various trade barriers.

The two countries also discussed market access and trade facilities, including for agriculture and food products, during the meeting. Besides the border trade, Indonesia and Malaysia agreed to strengthen investment cooperation and work together for a favourable investment climate in the two countries.

Consensus was also reached between trade ministers of the two countries to continue their collaboration on issues of mutual interest, including e-commerce, agriculture, halal products, and standard certification sectors, he noted.

The Indonesian minister expressed hope that outcomes from the 4th Indonesia-Malaysia JTIC will be a strong foundation for the two countries to enhance their trade and investment cooperation.

According to data from Indonesian Trade Ministry, the total trade between Indonesia and Malaysia reached US$24.22 billion in 2025, consisting of US$13.09 billion in Indonesian exports to Malaysia and US$11.12 billion in imports from Malaysia.
