League Cup: Liverpool edge Chelsea in penalty shoot-out

Translate

Liverpool reached the League Cup quarter-finals after eliminating Chelsea on penalties (6-5), following a 1-1 draw. Wesley Fofana sealed the Blues’ exit by sending his spot-kick well over the bar. Another French defender at Chelsea, Maxence Lacroix, went off injured before half-time, a week before the France squad is announced.

Also in the League Cup, Manchester City knocked out Brighton through penalties (4-3) after a 2-2 draw, thanks in part to two saves from former Marseille goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli. Crystal Palace beat Fulham 1-0, while Sunderland defeated Brentford 3-2, with Jocelin Ta Bi involved in all three goals.

In Germany, Bayern thrashed Magdeburg 6-1, with Michael Olise scoring twice. Harry Kane, honoured three days after winning the Ballon d’Or, remained on the bench.

Real Madrid apologised to China following comments by Kylian Mbappé about Mao Zedong.

In Spain, 24 Copa del Rey matches were postponed following a railway accident in the country.

In the Women’s Champions League, OL Lyonnes beat Inter Milan 6-0.

In the EuroLeague, ASVEL came from behind to beat Partizan 82-75.

In the NBA, AJ Dybantsa scored 19 points on his debut for Washington, who lost 121-111 to Cleveland.

Finally, Novak Djokovic and Adrian Mannarino both advanced, in Basel and Vienna respectively.
