A 13-year-old boy was seriously injured after allegedly falling from the third floor of a secondary school building in Kulim, Kedah, last Sunday.

Kulim police chief Syamsul Sinring said police received a report from a 48-year-old teacher after the student was found lying near the staircase of Block E at about 3.40pm during recess, Berita Harian reported.

“The complainant arrived at the scene and found the victim still conscious and able to speak. He was taken to Kulim Hospital for treatment,” Syamsul was quoted as saying.

Syamsul said police interviews with the victim found that he had intentionally fallen from the third floor because he was under academic pressure.

He said the student claimed he often compared his academic performance with that of his older sister, who is currently in Form 4 at the same school.

“The victim said examinations would be held next week and he was worried that he would not be able to meet his parents’ expectations,” Syamsul added.

He said investigations found that some students had seen an Instagram story posted by the student a day before the incident about pressure related to his studies and family, but the post had since been deleted.
