Hawke has had many notable roles throughout his career, and one that fans have recently enjoyed is his role as the horrifying and devilish Grabber in Scott Derrickson's horror movies The Black Phone and its sequel. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Hawke addressed his career so far as well as the potential of returning as the serial killer Grabber and making Black Phone a trilogy:
"If he has an idea that excites him, then I’m sure everybody would get on board. He’s not going to do it as a cash grab. He’ll do it if he has a way to express himself."
The actor had the chilling role of The Grabber, marking a thrilling and dark turn in Hawke's career after appearing in Sinister and The Purge with Derrickson. The Black Phone franchise is a huge success for Blumhouse Productions and Universal Pictures since it had low production budgets and became huge successes at the box office. The 2022 film The Black Phone grossed over $161.4 million worldwide, while Black Phone 2, released in 2025, grossed $132 million globally.
The movies are based on a short story written by the king of horror, Stephen King's son, Joe Hill. The Black Phone received amazing feedback for its cast, including Hawke, alongside Mason Thames, Madeleine McGraw, Jeremy Davies, and James Ransome.
On Rotten Tomatoes, critics gave the first installment an impressive 81% rating, with reviews stating, "The Black Phone delivers one of the best stories and some of the best characters that I have seen all year. Ethan Hawke's performance as The Grabber paired with Derrickson's directing of Cargill's script is a match made in hell."
Hawke had previously addressed a third Black Phone installment and even said, "Genre’s a great place to play, and every genre is kind of a sequel, in a way, because you’re building off such pre-existing expectations. I would like to go to hell with the Grabber. That’s what I’d like to do. I’d like to get to know him. That would be my dream for the third one, to let it be a character piece about what made him, who he is now, and how he’s haunting other people’s dreams."
Perhaps Black Phone 3 could explore exactly who The Grabber is, what he is, and why he is the way he is. However, at the time of writing, there are no concrete plans for a third Black Phone movie.
