Indonesia consolidates 44 district leaders to develop bioethanol

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Agriculture Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman said his ministry is seeking collaboration with leaders of 44 district governments nationwide to develop production sites of bioethanol based on sugarcane, cassava, and corn to strengthen energy security.
Speaking after a coordination meeting with the 44 district heads in Jakarta on Monday, he said the Agriculture Ministry aims to bring regional governments together to map land potential, identify suitable commodities, and assess each region’s readiness to supply feedstock for the bioethanol initiative.
Sulaiman explained that the active involvement of district administrations is essential for developing integrated bioethanol production sites encompassing feedstock plantations and processing facilities.
To that end, he said the government is preparing up to two million hectares of land across various regions as a foundation for developing the national bioethanol industry while strengthening the agricultural sector through feedstock supply chains.
The minister further explained that the initiative requires increased production of sugarcane, cassava, and corn as bioethanol feedstocks, stressing the need for intervention at the upstream level.
He also underscored bioethanol development as one of the government’s key instruments for fully harnessing Indonesia’s agricultural potential to achieve self-sufficiency in both energy and food.
"God willing, Indonesia will soon emerge as a superpower," Sulaiman said.
He reiterated the importance of strengthening synergy between the central and regional governments in developing bioethanol production sites, which he said would help ensure adequate feedstock supplies while creating economic opportunities for local communities.
The approach is also expected to enable the agricultural sector to contribute more significantly to Indonesia’s transition to cleaner energy, he concluded.
The coordination meeting brought together district heads from Karo, Serdang Bedagai, Muara Enim, Musi Banyuasin, North Musi Rawas, Ogan Komering Ulu, Bangka, West Bangka, South Bangka, Central Bangka, South Lampung, Central Lampung, East Lampung, Mesuji, and Way Kanan.
Also present were leaders from Garut, Sukabumi, Wonogiri, Pati, Gunungkidul, Bone, Jeneponto, Gowa, Soppeng, Tojo Una-Una, Sigi, Bombana, South Konawe, Bolaang Mongondow, North Minahasa, Pohuwato, Boalemo, North Gorontalo, Sumbawa, Bima, Dompu, Southwest Sumba, South Central Timor, Malaka, Bengkayang, Aru Islands, and Merauke, among others.
