My neighbour plays the same song – badly – on his keyboard until late. What can I do?
Q: A neighbour has acquired a new electric keyboard. He’s been picking out the tune The Windmills of Your Mind quite badly with one finger every day, sometimes until midnight.
What can I do? J.S., Woonona, NSW
A: Round like a circle in a spiral, like a wheel within a wheel. Yes, this song can be quite grating, it’s an audial ordeal. It keeps on getting faster and the tune keeps looping round. So I can’t even imagine how you’re dealing with the sound of a guy on a piano, just one-fingered with no skill, playing every day and night, why that’s enough to make you kill. Oh, the desperate thoughts you’ll find … faced with The Windmills of Your Mind.
Wearing earplugs may be useful if you want to drown the drone. Or put on a pair of headphones and play music of your own. Though this doesn’t solve the problem of him playing late at night, when you cannot get to sleep with fists and jaws clenched up so tight. A pillow on your head might stop you getting in a tizz. Or sneak into his window, hold a pillow over his. Oh, the darkest thoughts you’ll find … to stop The Windmills of Your Mind.
Never ending or beginning, drifting over from next door, this song can do much damage to a neighbourly rapport. So what I am suggesting is pop over to his place, and gift the guy your headphones with a friendly gifting face. Tell him that you struggle nightly trying to get any sleep, and a keyboard played with headphones hardly makes a single peep. Mention that you’d be so grateful if he could start right away. Maybe share an online link with a few different songs to play ...
