Chilly morning? Incredible photo snaps stag's warm breath as temperatures dip in London

As Londoners woke up this morning, they were greeted with the first sign of the autumnal weather to come but, for the deer in Bushy Park, it was a particularly chilly start.

In the south-west London royal park, an incredible photo was snapped that caught a stag's warm breath as it bellowed during this morning's crisp weather.

Photographer Cristi Vasile captured the breathtaking shot by arriving at Bushy Park well before sunrise.

She said: 'At this time of the morning, it was still dark, so I couldn't really see the deer. Instead, I was listening for them.

'The sound of the stags bellowing in the darkness helped me work out where they were. Once I had an idea of their position, I started thinking about the light. I knew exactly what I wanted. So I positioned myself before the sun came up and waited.'

She continued: 'In the cold morning and low sunlight, the backlit stag's breath stood out in the air when he bellowed. When the air is cold enough, you can see the warm breath coming out of the animal's mouth, but having the sun behind him makes it really stand out.'

The preparation to capture the picture-perfect shot took mere seconds.

Ms Vasile said: 'The photograph might look like it happened by chance, but there was a lot of preparation behind those few seconds: getting into the park while it was still dark... working out where the sun would rise and putting myself in exactly the right position.

'Then all I had to do was be ready and when that breath appeared in the morning light, I knew I had the shot.'
