The Netherlands has pledged to support Ghana’s efforts to develop a stronger and more competitive poultry industry through technical expertise, knowledge exchange and investment.

The Netherlands Ambassador to Ghana, H.E. Hans Akerboom, said his country was ready to work with Ghanaian stakeholders to identify practical solutions to challenges facing the sector and expand opportunities for local poultry farmers and businesses.

Speaking at a poultry round-table discussion in Accra on Monday, October 26, 2026, he said stronger collaboration between the two countries could help Ghana harness its growing poultry market to increase domestic production and create jobs.

H.E. Akerboom said the Netherlands welcomed the country’s ambition to strengthen its poultry sector and was committed to exploring ways to translate the partnership into tangible results.

“We warmly welcome this ambition and we are committed to exploring how we can translate it into a clear result,” he said.

He noted that the Netherlands had developed its poultry industry through sustained investment in knowledge, innovation and collaboration, adding that these experiences could help inform Ghana’s efforts, taking into account the country’s specific needs.

The Ambassador said the partnership was particularly important given Ghana’s reliance on imported poultry to meet domestic demand.

He disclosed that Ghana imported poultry worth approximately €18 million from the Netherlands alone in 2024, while other supplies came from countries including Belgium, the United States and Brazil.

The two countries have also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on how to strengthen the sector

According to him, the figures highlighted the potential for Ghanaian farmers and businesses to increase their share of the domestic market.

Mr Akerboom stressed that the objective should go beyond reducing imports to creating conditions that would enable local farmers to expand production, supply the market consistently and benefit from existing demand.
