Man remanded after ramming traffic policeman at roadblock

IPOH: A 29-year-old car wash worker has been remanded for five days after ramming a traffic policeman while fleeing a roadblock on Thursday.

Magistrate Lau Eric issued the remand order, which runs until Sept 30, to facilitate further investigations under Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder and Section 44(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

In the incident, Lance Corporal Muhammad Badrul Izwany Pauzi, 29, suffered serious injuries and was treated at the intensive care unit (ICU) of Sunway Medical Centre Ipoh after undergoing surgery.

Earlier, media reported that the policeman suffered fractures to his left arm and right leg after being hit by a car driven by the suspect while he was attempting to flee the roadblock.

Ipoh district police chief, Assistant Commissioner Muhammad Najib Hamzah, said the incident occurred at about 9.45am at traffic lights near the Perak State Secretariat Building on Jalan Silibin.

He said the suspect had made a U-turn from the left lane before ramming one of the traffic policemen who was pursuing him.

The suspect, who fled towards Gunung Lang, was also reported to have driven against the flow of traffic nearby before losing control of the vehicle near the Taman Wing Onn traffic lights and being arrested by police.

An initial urine screening test found the suspect positive for methamphetamine.
