Mumbai City’s late surge proved insufficient as Churchill Brothers began its Indian Super League (ISL) campaign with a 2-1 win at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Margao, Goa, on Sunday.
Gaurav Bora, who previously played in the ISL with NorthEast United and Mohammedan Sporting, opened the scoring through a header in the 57th minute, while Sebastián Gutiérrez doubled the lead, rounding Mumbai City’s goalkeeper T. P. Rehenesh, four minutes from time.
Sergio Llamas, who joined Mumbai City this summer, tried to drag the team back into the game with a stoppage-time goal. However, it proved to be too little, too late as Manolo Marquez started his ISL 2026-27 campaign on a forgettable note, on a ground where he had previously served as the head coach of FC Goa.
For Churchill Brothers on the other hand, it marked a memorable debut in the league, where it is playing after acquiring the league-rights of Jamshedpur FC.
