Indonesia's Sumaya advances to Asian Games teqball final

Indonesia secured a place in the women's singles teqball final at the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya after Sumaya defeated India's Quimcy Joaquim Dsouza 2-1 on Saturday.

Sumaya overcame Dsouza in a three-set contest, winning 7-12, 12-9, and 12-7 to secure a place in the ultimate match and move within one victory of Indonesia's first Asian Games gold medal in teqball.

She endured a rough start, falling behind 1-5 before conceding the opening set 7-12. The Indonesian contender maintained her composure in the second set and claimed the first two points, although Dsouza quickly drew level.

The pair traded points in a tightly contested battle, with the score tied at 8-8 and 9-9 before Sumaya pulled away to seal the second set 12-9 and force a rubber set.

Dsouza made a strong start to the deciding set, winning the first three points in a row and opening up a 7-3 lead by the timeout.

However, Sumaya managed to halt her opponent's momentum with aggressive attacking play and strong serving, staging a comeback to win the set 12-7 and secure her place in the final.

She had earned her spot in the semifinals with a 2-0 victory over Cambodia's DY Koemyean in a repechage match, prevailing 12-8 and 12-7.

The win came after Sumaya finished second in Group B, where she defeated Lebanon's Dandal Kamar and Kyrgyzstan's Aidana Otorbaeva but lost to Myanmar's Wai Khin Hnin.

Having reached the final, Sumaya is now one win away from becoming the first Indonesian athlete to claim an Asian Games gold medal in teqball.
