Remain neutral in political matters, Nwuche tells monarch

A former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Chibudom Nwuche, has urged traditional rulers in Ekpeye Kingdom, Ahoada East Local Government Area of Rivers State, to steer clear of partisan politics to preserve their dignity and respect among their subjects.

Nwuche, who is the Chairman of the South-South Development Commission, made the call during activities marking his 65th birthday in Ochiba, his country home, on Sunday.

He said monarchs should play fatherly roles and remain neutral in political matters, warning that their participation in partisan activities could cause disaffection among their subjects and diminish the respect attached to the traditional institution.

Nwuche said, “It is inappropriate for a royal father to play partisan politics. The role of a leader of such category is to be a father to all, irrespective of party affinities.”

“Look at how our kings behave; some of our kings will go to a rally, wear regalia, and dance as politicians.

“I was instrumental in the emergence of some of those kings, and I am advising them to stay away from politics. A king must have honour and dignity. I advise them to change their ways.”

Nwuche, who also advocated an amnesty programme for repentant cultists in the area, said the measure would help improve security and enable residents to return to farming without fear.

“I’ve told our boys who are carrying guns that they must stop it. I’m advocating now that they should be given amnesty, so we can have peace. Our people are farmers; they desire peace to farm,” he said.

He expressed hope that an amnesty programme would be introduced before the end of the year, adding that he did not want to see young people from the area killed.

However, Nwuche urged residents to support President Bola Tinubu and candidates of the APC and the Renewed Hope Coalition in the 2027 elections.

He also called on the people of Ekpeye Kingdom to unite for the development of the area.

The former deputy speaker thanked widows and Christian faithful who attended the prayer session organised to mark his birthday and pledged to continue supporting widows, orphans and other vulnerable people in the area.

Other activities marking the anniversary included a visit to the Adventist Rehabilitation, Welfare and Orphanage Home in Edeoha, Ukpata Kingdom, and a novelty football match in Ahoada town.
