Najib’s residence assessed for house arrest, but location not yet finalised, authorities say

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 21 — Police and the Prisons Department held a coordination meeting today to assess the security aspects of Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s residence in preparation for the former prime minister’s house arrest.

Sentul district police chief ACP Anuar Bakri Abdul Salam said the meeting between the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) and the Prisons Department took place at Najib’s residence here, however, clarified that the location for the house arrest has not yet been finalised as the authorities have not yet received the official order document.

“It has not been finalised because we have not yet received the order. It will be finalised once the order is obtained, and there will be specific conditions attached,” he told reporters outside Najib’s residence here today.

Elaborating on the meeting details, Anuar Bakri who was seen arriving at the residence around 2:30pm, explained that the police were present to examine security aspects outside the residential area, while the Prisons Department oversaw matters related to the detention itself.

“There are no specific details yet, one of the matters discussed was an assessment of Najib’s residence. The Prisons Department requested the police to join them to look at the situation from our perspective — specifically regarding security,” he said.

Regarding security control procedures in the area, Anuar Bakri denied claims that additional structures, such as barbed wire or special iron fencing, would be installed at the residence.

Last Friday, His Majesty, Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia granted a conditional pardon to Najib, allowing him to serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest until August 23, 2028, subject to the payment of a RM50 million fine.

The Legal Affairs Division (BHEUU) of the Prime Minister’s Department announced that the decision was reached during the 64th meeting of the Pardons Board for the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur, Labuan, and Putrajaya, held at Istana Negara.

The former Member of Parliament for Pekan has been serving his sentence at Kajang Prison since August 23, 2022, following his conviction for misappropriating RM42 million in funds belonging to SRC International Sdn Bhd. — Bernama
