This article covers a developing story. Continue to check back with us as we will be adding more information as it becomes available.

After almost a decade of waiting, HBO is finally moving forward with their Crazy Rich Asians series.

Kevin Kwan's bestselling romantic comedy novel first made its way to the screen with the 2018 film of the same name, telling the story of Chinese-American economics professor Rachel who finds herself in a challenging new world when she learns her boyfriend is actually part of one of the richest families in Singapore, becoming the target of scrutiny by some and embraced by others. Led by Golden Globe nominee Constance Wu, Crazy Rich Asians was a critical and commercial smash upon its release, with initial plans for two sequel movies based on Kwan's novels.

Now, following 2025 reports of HBO Max developing a different adaptation of the film, HBO themselves have officially greenlit the Crazy Rich Asians TV series. The show, which is being showrun by the film's co-writer Adele Lim, is set to be a sequel to the 2018 blockbuster hit, said to be picking up sometime after the events of the adaptation of the first installment in Kevin Kwan's novel series.

In addition to the greenlight, HBO has confirmed that the Crazy Rich Asians series will feature multiple returning stars from the film, namely Constance Wu as protagonist Rachel, Henry Golding as her love interest Nick, Ronny Chieng as Nick's cousin Eddie and Michelle Yeoh as Nick's over-protective mother Eleanor. Moreover, as revealed in a video announcement from the studio, the sequel show will begin production sometime in 2027, with original director Jon M. Chu also returning as an executive producer alongside Kwan, Lim, Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson. Chu wrote of his franchise return in the following statement:

Jon M. Chu: Eight years ago, CRAZY RICH ASIANS changed my life, and I got to make it with the most creative and hilarious group of people I’ve ever known. Since then, this cast has become movie stars, superheroes, arena-filling performers and even an Oscar winner, so bringing everyone back together feels like coming home. It’s been incredible watching audiences make this movie part of their lives, from mahjong nights to becoming the ultimate airplane movie, and I can’t wait to share what comes next. Finally, I get to answer the question I’ve been asked almost every day for eight years: "When are we getting the sequel?" Well…bok bok b---h, we’re back.
