Orange Level 6 warning issued as severe storms threaten parts of SA

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued an Orange Level 6 warning for severe thunderstorms, with residents warned of possible flooding, damaging winds, hail and travel disruptions across parts of three provinces.

The warning affects the North West, northern Free State and north-eastern Northern Cape, where storms could cause flooding in vulnerable settlements and along roads.

SAWS warned that strong, gusty winds and hail accompanying the thunderstorms could damage structures and affect communities.

The storms may also disrupt travel and lead to possible interruptions to municipal services in affected areas.

Other provinces also face severe thunderstorm risks

An Orange Level 5 warning remains in place for Gauteng and the Highveld of Mpumalanga, where severe thunderstorms could result in flooding, infrastructure damage, travel disruptions and service interruptions.

Authorities have also issued a Yellow Level 4 warning for parts of north-eastern North West and the eastern Northern Cape.

Also western Free State and areas along the Lesotho border due to possible flooding, infrastructure damage and municipal disruptions.

Lightning and damaging winds remain a concern

A Yellow Level 2 warning is in place for parts of Limpopo and Mpumalanga, where excessive lightning could cause localised damage, falling trees and fire incidents.

Coastal areas between Table Bay and Cape Agulhas are also under a Yellow Level 2 warning for damaging winds that could affect ports, harbours and navigation at sea.

Residents in affected areas are urged to stay updated with weather alerts. They should also avoid crossing flooded roads and take precautions as storms develop.
