If you haven’t played Pokémon Pokopia on Nintendo Switch 2 yet, it’s time to meet the newest look our beloved Pikachu is “flaunting” these days. Fair warning: it may not be as adorable as you’d expect, unlike the cheerful yellow furball fans have known for decades.

Meet Peakychu, a pale, droopy-eared version of the franchise’s most recognizable character. Peakychu is part of Pokémon Pokopia, a Switch 2 exclusive, and has an interesting but sad origin story to share. But in case you aren’t playing the game or want to know more about how the design came to life, The Pokémon Company has shared some concept artwork, revealing more about the character’s design, including details that set it apart from the original Pikachu.

Peakychu's Design in Pokémon Pokopia Has Some Surprising Details

As you can see, the concept artwork offers a closer look at Peakychu through different poses, showcasing six different emotions—Default, Small Joy, Large Joy, Surprise, Anger, and Sadness—along with accompanying artist notes.

You’d probably notice its tail before anything else. Unlike Pikachu’s familiar lightning-bolt-shaped tail, Peakychu has a smaller, drooping tail that drags along the ground as it moves. The artwork also notes that the character glows when it produces light, giving Peakychu a distinct appearance instead of just changing its color. Its uneven ears and pale fur create a character that looks like a worn-out version of the original, which suits the story of how Pikachu lost its electricity by sharing it with friends and ended up as Peakychu.

Pokémon Pokopia Gives Familiar Pokémon Like Pikachu a Different Purpose

Peakychu in Pokemon Pokopia

Peakychu fits perfectly into the unusual world of Pokémon Pokopia, where players encounter Pokémon with distinctive appearances while rebuilding an abandoned town. Released for the Switch 2 on March 5, the game puts players in control of a Ditto that takes human form. Rather than focusing on traditional Pokémon battles, the experience centers on crafting, building habitats, and helping Pokémon settle into their surroundings.

Peakychu is not the only character in Pokémon Pokopia with a different look. The game also features Mosslax, a Snorlax covered in moss, and Professor Tangrowth, who guides players through their adventures. All these “odd” redesigns suit the game’s setting, where Pokémon appear in a variety of unusual forms as players help restore the environment. Unlike the mainline Pokémon games, where players typically collect Pokémon, battle trainers, and work towards becoming a Champion, Pokémon Pokopia takes a more relaxed approach.

However, building a home for these Pokémon involves more than simply placing furniture or decorating the surroundings. Players must learn different moves from the Pokémon they encounter and use their abilities to transform the environment. This approach also gives the Pokémon themselves a different role. Instead of serving primarily as battle companions, they become neighbors and collaborators who help bring the town back to life.

If you want to meet Peakychu and help restore her electricity, head to the Nintendo eShop and grab your copy of Pokémon Pokopia today.
