Franco Mastantuono’s 79th-minute goal and Valdepenas’ stoppage time fourth gave Fiorentina a dramatic 4-2 victory at Sassuolo, despite a brace from Armand Laurienté at the Mapei Stadium.
Sassuolo went into the game 14th on eight points after Tuesday’s 6-2 home thrashing by Lazio. Alberto Aquilani was without the suspended Kristian Thorstvedt, who was sent off in that game, and long-term absentees Koné and Leysen, but Jay Idzes was back in the side. Fiorentina were hovering just above the Serie A relegation zone on five points after Thursday’s 2-2 home draw with Atalanta. Paolo Vanoli was still missing Marin Pongračić and Parisi.
Fiorentina had the better of the early possession. Mastantuono dragged an early effort wide, and Stefano Turati saved Mateo Pellegrino’s header from Viery’s cross.
Sassuolo took the lead against the run of play on 25 minutes. Sebastiano Esposito sent Laurienté through on the counter-attack, and the Frenchman calmly drilled a low shot into the bottom-left corner.

Mastantuono curled a free kick just past the top corner as Fiorentina pushed for a reply. Radu Drăgușin, Ibrahim Sulemana and Alieu Njie were all booked in a scrappy end to the half.
The visitors equalised in first-half stoppage time. Njie fed Pellegrino inside the box, and the striker cut inside his marker before firing into the bottom-left corner.
Fiorentina win thrilling second half
Fiorentina turned it around five minutes after the restart. Marco Brescianini’s pass released Njie, who beat Turati with a low shot from outside the area into the bottom-right corner.
Turati kept Sassuolo in it by denying Mastantuono after a fine solo run. The hosts then levelled on 65 minutes, when Laurienté met Nemanja Matić’s cross and fired into the top-right corner from a tight angle. Marcenaro reviewed the goal for a possible handball in the build-up, but it stood.
Both coaches turned to their benches. Vanoli brought on Wilfried Gnonto, Christ Inao Oulaï, Beto and Pote. Sassuolo lost Sebastian Walukiewicz to injury.

The change paid off for Fiorentina within two minutes. Pote laid the ball off to Mastantuono, who controlled it and fired a left-footed shot from the edge of the box into the bottom-left corner.
Beto blazed over from distance as Fiorentina tried to make the game safe, and Sassuolo couldn’t create a clear chance to equalise.
Victor Valdepenas wrapped up the game with a goal in injury time.
