Artist carves minuscule gold dove for peace on Earth

Micro-artist Chen Forng-shean (陳逢顯) spent three months hand-carving a gold dove just one millimeter in size, carefully detailing its head, body, wings, feet and beak. The dove holds an olive branch to symbolize peace.

The artwork is titled Dove of Peace and condenses humanity’s aspiration for world peace into a minuscule golden dove, Chen said.

The dove is meant to convey the simple yet universal wish for a world without war, where humanity can enjoy lasting peace and freedom, the artist said.

Doves have long symbolized peace, with olive branches representing reconciliation, hope and peace, he said, adding that carving both symbols on such a small scale was a technical challenge.

Chen has devoted 45 years to creating miniature artworks, using immense patience, a steady hand and intense concentration to create miniature works from wood, bamboo, stone, paper, rice and metal.

With pieces exploring nature, ecology, life, humanities and arts, Chen has pushed the limits of handmade art, developing his distinctive “five facets of miniature artwork,” encompassing sculpture, engraving, calligraphy, painting and carving.

Dove of Peace is on display at the Chen Forng-shean Miniature Art Museum, where visitors can observe the miniature sculpture under a microscope.

The museum is exhibiting about 100 of Chen’s miniature artworks from his 45-year career, including sculptures, carvings, books and paintings, showing how the artist creates an expansive world of art on an extraordinarily small canvas.
