Foreign Ministry issues travel warning for Tigray region of Ethiopia amid local escalation

The warning comes amid the renewal of armed clashes in Tigray and surrounding areas. At the same time, Ethiopian Airlines has suspended flights to and from the airports in Mekelle, Axum, and Shire.

The Foreign Ministry issued a warning to Israelis following a security escalation in the Tigray region of northern Ethiopia, calling on them to avoid all travel to the area until further notice.

The warning comes amid the renewal of armed clashes in Tigray and surrounding areas. At the same time, Ethiopian Airlines has suspended flights to and from the airports in Mekelle, Axum, and Shire.

No date has been provided for the resumption of flights.

Israelis who are already in the region are requested to limit nonessential movement, avoid gatherings, demonstrations, military facilities, and flashpoints, and follow the instructions of local authorities.

The Foreign Ministry also warned of rapid changes in the situation, which could include road closures, communications disruptions, and damage to transportation options and the ability to leave the area.

Therefore, the ministry recommends avoiding intercity travel or attempts to leave Tigray independently without first ensuring that the route and destination are safe.
