Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Tourism announced that foreign tourist visits to Indonesia by August 2026 had reached 10.58 million, representing an annual growth of 5.38 percent.

"In August 2026, Indonesia received 1.6 million foreign tourist visits, a 6.27 percent increase compared to the previous year. From January to August 2026, foreign tourist visits reached 10.58 million, representing an annual growth of 5.38 percent," Tourism Minister Widiyanti Putri Wardhana said in a report on Friday.

According to her, this achievement demonstrates Indonesia's tourism foundation that remains strong and tourism activity continues to grow positively.

The strategy of diversifying short-haul and medium-haul markets also shows positive developments. Tourist arrivals from other Asian regions grew by 8.41 percent, Southeast Asia by 7.75 percent, and Oceania by 7.36 percent.

As the situation gradually improved, tourist arrivals from the Middle East also recorded cumulative positive growth of 1.30 percent.

Furthermore, Deputy Minister of Tourism Ni Luh Puspa said that in August 2026, the number of domestic tourist arrivals reached 104.30 million trips, an increase of 11.47 percent compared to August 2025.

Cumulatively, from January to August 2026, 842.15 million domestic tourist trips were recorded, representing a growth of 4.29 percent.

"Domestic tourism remains a key pillar of Indonesia's tourism resilience. We want its growth to benefit more regions. Therefore, we will continue to encourage people to travel domestically while promoting tourist visits to a wider range of destinations," she remarked.

On the other hand, domestic tourist trips abroad fell 6.02 percent in August 2026. Cumulatively, from January to August 2026, domestic tourist trips fell 3.56 percent to 5.91 million trips.

The surplus between foreign tourist visits and domestic tourist trips widened to 960,000 visits in August 2026, from 820,000 in August 2025.

The total surplus stood at 4.67 million visits, compared with 3.91 million visits in the same period last year.

Furthermore, Ni Luh explained that the tourism sector's contribution to Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in 2025 was recorded at 4.78 percent.

"Tourism is not just about travel and destinations. It also creates jobs, supports MSMEs, attracts investment, generates foreign exchange, and contributes to connectivity, culture, the environment, and local economies across Indonesia. Tourism is a driver of national economic growth," she pointed out.

The Ministry aims to ensure that tourism growth delivers not only higher visitor numbers but also greater benefits.

Each tourist is expected to generate business opportunities, while every trip creates new prospects and each developing destination boosts community welfare while preserving nature, culture, and Indonesia's identity, according to the Ministry.
