Two of the five suspects killed in a shootout with police in Bacoor, Cavite, on Tuesday were former police officers, the Philippine National Police (PNP) said Wednesday.
“Dalawa po doon sa napatay na suspect ay dating pulis. So yung isa po was already dismissed. Another is nag-AWOL po noong February,” PNP spokesperson Police Colonel Allen Rae Co said at a press briefing.
(Two of the slain suspects were former police officers. One had already been dismissed, while the other went absent without official leave [AWOL] in February.)
“These two former police officers were involved (in the) Caloocan robbery case,” he added.
Five suspected members of the Gapos Gang syndicate were killed in an armed encounter with the Bacoor City Police on Tuesday in Barangay Molino.
Police chased the suspects as they fled aboard a car and a motorcycle after they were spotted lurking near their target subdivision around noon. The sedan overturned during the chase.
Co said the former police staff sergeant who went AWOL in February 2026 did so shortly after he was implicated in or investigated in connection with the Caloocan robbery case.
A resolution for his dismissal had already been issued, with the formal dismissal order still pending, Co said.
The other former police officer had been dismissed from the service in 2018, he added.
Two other suspects involved in the shootout remain at large.
The suspects were allegedly members of a robbery group that had been under police surveillance for its involvement in several robbery incidents and other crimes.
Co said the group had planned to enter a subdivision or residential area while posing as security guards.
The group allegedly intended to rob a businessman believed to be keeping valuable items and a substantial amount of money at his residence.
One of the suspects was wearing a white security guard uniform, drawing the attention of the subdivision's security personnel because their guards wore blue uniforms.
Police operatives attempted to stop the suspects for questioning, but the group fled, triggering a chase and an exchange of gunfire.
No police personnel were injured in the shootout.
Authorities recovered three .45-caliber firearms and two .38-caliber revolvers from the suspects.— MCG, GMA News
