OJK urges state banks to maintain risk management in gov't programs

Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Financial Services Authority (OJK) expects banks under the Association of State-Owned Banks (Himbara) to continue applying risk management and good governance, given their significant role in financing the government's priority programs.
"The size of credit or financing disbursed should not be the sole objective. It must also be accompanied by clear credit structures and repayment sources," OJK Chief Executive of Banking Supervision Dian Ediana Rae said in a written response here on Monday.
Overall, he said that OJK views the role of Himbara banks in supporting various government priority programs positively.
Himbara banks are expected to help ensure the success of various government development programs while still being relied upon to generate profit.
"As such, Himbara banks are an important part of driving economic growth while also playing an active role in promoting equitable welfare," Rae said.
Some of the government programs involving banking sector participation include Smallholder Business Credit (KUR), credit write-offs for MSMEs, the Three Million Houses program, Red and White Village Cooperatives (KDKMP), and the Free Nutritious Meals (MBG) program.
"This support shows that the banking industry consistently plays a role in supporting the national development agenda while maintaining economic growth momentum," Rae said.
Regarding KDKMP specifically, he said OJK generally supports the government's commitment to fulfilling its credit repayment obligations related to the program, as has been conveyed by the Finance Minister on several occasions.
OJK is optimistic that various aspects related to the fulfillment of payment obligations to Himbara banks have been or are currently being prepared.
This includes ensuring clarity on payment sources, verification and validation processes and the implementing institutions involved, the necessary documentation, as well as regulations and/or implementation guidelines needed as the basis for carrying out the KDKMP credit payment process.
"OJK hopes that the banking sector, including Himbara banks, can continue to grow strongly and healthily, based on the application of sound risk management principles and good governance, so that they can continue to support various government development programs to support Indonesia's economy and public welfare," Rae said.
