A defeat in the 2nd T20I against the West Indies has seen a much-debated question arise once again: Is head coach Gautam Gambhir chopping and changing the playing XI too much? After winning the first T20I against the West Indies, India suffered a defeat in a high-scoring contest in the second match as the side from the Caribbean nation chased down a target of 250 runs in Ranchi. The result prompted critics to question Gambhir's approach, arguing that constant alterations to the squad are preventing India from performing at their best.
Earlier, workload management was cited as the main reason behind resting key players, but the team's structure has changed significantly in recent years. In comparison to 3-4 years ago, very few players now represent India across all three formats. As a result, this continuous squad rotation is not sitting well with former cricketers and experts, including Shane Watson.
"India haven't been performing at their best, and I believe it's because there's too much chopping and changing around the players," Watson said on the In The Middle With Watto podcast.
"I understand that they play all year round and continue to fund world cricket because they're playing outside the IPL all the time. They do need to rotate players and keep them fresh, but there still needs to be a little more continuity."
"And if they do that, it'll be scary for the rest of the world. It's going to be ridiculously difficult to beat them," added Watson, who is a Chennai Super Kings (CSK) legend.
Is Watson's Criticism Fair?
Watson's comments do raise a valid point about the importance of role clarity and squad chemistry, especially in white-ball cricket where momentum and player confidence play a bigger role. Since the time to spend on the pitch and adjust to conditions is shorter, the confidence and mental preparedness with which a player arrives holds a lot more importance. With Gambhir keen to try different combitions, pick players according to match-ups, the constant reshuffling can disrupt a team's synergy and leave players feeling insecure about their places in the side.
However, it also has to be noted that Gambhir's strategy likely stems from a desire to build a resilient, adaptable bench strength and test tactical combinations ahead of major ICC tournaments. While rotation is essential to prevent burnout in a relentless modern calendar, striking the right balance remains crucial.
