Tanjungpinang (ANTARA) - Indonesia's Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries and Raja Ali Haji Maritime University (UMRAH) are partnering to advance the blue economy through measured fishing and preparations for potential sites for the 2027 Red and White Fishing Village program.

Lotharia Latif, the ministry's director general of capture fisheries, said the partnership would support the government's measured-fishing policy and development of coastal communities.

"Collaboration with higher education institutions is important to improve data quality, support the implementation of measured fishing and ensure proper planning for KNMP," Latif said in Tanjungpinang on Monday.

The partners will conduct capture-fisheries research, collect data and identify potential sites for the Red and White Fishing Village Program in the 2027 budget year, he said.

Latif said accurate, accountable data were essential to measured fishing, which aims to manage and use Indonesia's marine resources sustainably.

He also stressed that planners must consider the characteristics and needs of coastal communities when selecting locations for the fishing village program.

Latif said the partnership reflected academia's commitment to national maritime development and efforts to advance the blue economy as a driver of sustainable growth.

He added that cooperation between the government and universities was expected to improve marine and fisheries governance and advance the blue economy to deliver tangible public benefits.

Dony Apdillah, dean of UMRAH's Faculty of Marine and Fisheries Sciences, welcomed the partnership as an opportunity for the university to contribute more to fisheries policy.

"This cooperation represents a strategic avenue for UMRAH to apply its academic expertise and research findings in support of fisheries policies and improve the welfare of coastal communities," he said.

Apdillah said the university could provide expertise on capture-fisheries management and help develop programs tailored to the needs of coastal communities.
