The Batman: Part II Set Photo Teases Big DC Comics Easter Egg

It’s rather alarming how little we actually know about The Batman: Part II right now. For instance, even with its main cast confirmed by director Matt Reeves via GIFs on social media, it apparently hasn’t been officially confirmed what characters newly cast actors like Sebastian Stan, Scarlett Johansson, and Brian Tyree Henry will be playing. This makes the highly anticipated Batman sequel tremendously mysterious, and while you’d think that photos taken during filming on set would give us clarity as to what’s going on in the movie, it seems like there are more questions than answers.

Thanks to set photos, we know that Robert Pattinson’s Batman wears a utility belt that is looking decidedly more yellow, and the Batsuit itself is inching closer to resembling that of Batman: Arkham Knight’s V8.03. Moreover, it’s obvious that Batman will once again be at odds with the Gotham City Police Department, only this time he’ll have a whole convoy of cruisers pursuing him in a chase sequence through snow-kissed city streets. In these set photos, we also get a glimpse at what may be one of the movie’s first DC Comics Easter eggs.

It’s Batman Vs. The GCPD In Part II

As per Twitter/X, fans have discerned that the police motorcycle that Batman commandeers has the number “201” written on it. And, taking a quick glance at the cover of Batman (1940) #201, it seems impossible for this to not be a reference to the comic, as it also features Batman being pursued by the ‘police.’

In Batman #201, Batman encounters police officers on a waterfront dock who accuse him of being a “phony Batman” and attempt to arrest him, as depicted on the cover. They say their orders are to “shoot to kill” and handcuff him, with Batman realizing a little too late that they aren’t actual officers before escaping.

Regardless of whether or not The Batman: Part II is adapting anything meaningful from Batman #201, it’s a great Easter egg that could merely be mirroring the imagery of Batman being ambushed by the police. That said, there could be an implicit meaning here within the context of the comic’s story; for example, it wouldn’t be out of the realm of possibility for the entirety of the GCPD chasing Batman to secretly be subordinates of the Court of Owls, the clandestine criminal society rumored to be the main villain faction of Reeves’ Epic Crime Saga.

Of course, because we already got a taste of how naturally corrupt the GCPD is in The Batman, it’s unlikely that anyone will need to impersonate an officer in order to deceive Batman. The last thing that The Batman’s Caped Crusader is likely to do is allow himself to be caught or turned in to the authorities again, especially after punching Lieutenant Jim Gordon and fleeing from the GCPD.

The Batman: Part II’s Story Is A Mystery Right Now, And That’s Exciting

The ending of The Batman illustrated that Batman can be a symbol of hope for Gotham City, which clashes tonally with how singularly vengeance-fueled Bruce Wayne is at the beginning of the movie. It’ll be interesting to see what the public’s perception of Batman is in The Batman: Part II, as a result, though something catastrophic must have happened if the whole force is trying to gun him down.

Gordon and Martinez are proof that there are individuals in The Batman’s GCPD who are not corrupt, and thus, an assault of this magnitude is intriguing. With any luck, The Batman: Part II will be taking inspiration from Mattson Tomlin’s fantastic Batman: The Imposter, and there may well and truly be a “phony Batman” that Pattinson’s real Batman is accused of being after all.

The Batman: Part II is scheduled to be released in theaters on February 18, 2028.
