Box Office: ‘Practical Magic 2’ Makes $4.7 Million in Previews

After a record-breaking run at the box office, it turns out “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” is no match for the witchy powers of “Practical Magic 2” stars Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock.

The Warner Bros. fantasy sequel has made $4.7 million in Thursday previews at the box office, and it’s expected to end “Spider-Man’s” six-week run as No. 1 on the charts. “Practical Magic 2” is anticipated to make $30 million to $40 million in its debut when it launches this weekend, and it’s on track to add another $18 million to $25 million internationally. That would put its global opening at $48 million to $65 million, and Warner Bros. produced the movie for $75 million.

Bullock and Kidman are back as Sally and Gillian Owens, two sisters who are witches and suffer from a curse that kills the men they love. The sequel takes place 25 years after the original 1998 cult classic movie, as the sisters try to break their family curse along with Sally’s daughters Kylie (Joey King) and Antonio (Maisie Williams). The cast for the sequel, directed by Susanne Bier, also includes Stockhard Channing, Dianne Wiest, Lee Pace, Xolo Maridueña and Solly McLeod.

Also opening this weekend is Disney’s music documentary “Oasis: Don’t Look Back in Anger,” which is targeting a $5 million to $7 million opening. The concert film follows Oasis band members and brothers Liam and Noel Gallagher as they reunite for the first time since 2009 and embark on their hit world tour.
