One of HBO Max's most spectacular R-rated thriller series quietly marks the end of an era for Sydney Sweeney's career. This is a name we have certainly heard a lot of in recent years, and for very good reason. Sweeney has been acting since 2009, when she appeared in single episodes of Heroes and Criminal Minds. The next years were full of similar appearances, including 90210 in 2010, Grey's Anatomy in 2014, and The Middle and Pretty Little Liars in 2017. Looking back at these episodes now, it's quite thrilling to see how far Sweeney has come since.
Everything changed for Sweeney when she took on a main role as Cassie Howard in 2019's Euphoria. Her career simply took off, and the following years saw the actor take on a slew of movie and TV projects. We've since seen Sweeney in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Anyone but You, Madame Web, and The Housemaid, as well as further TV projects like The Handmaid's Tale and The White Lotus. There's a whole lot to look forward to as well, as Sweeney already has an intriguing lineup of new projects. Interestingly, however, this doesn't currently involve more TV shows.
This year marked the end of Sweeney's time on Euphoria, as the highly acclaimed series wrapped up its third season in May 2026. As Sweeney's breakout show, Euphoria's conclusion naturally serves as a significant marker within her career. However, it also bookends what has been a rather consistent stint of TV appearances. Sweeney has a whole lot on her plate, but she has shifted all her focus to film.
Next up on Sweeney's slate is The Housemaid's Secret, the direct sequel to her massively successful The Housemaid, directed by Paul Feig. This should be followed by Netflix's live-action film adaptation of the popular anime series Gundam, which will co-star Noah Centineo. Sweeney is also attached to additional projects currently in development, including Scandalous!, a biographical drama about actress Kim Novak, and Hollow, a reimagining of the classic Legend of Sleepy Hollow, in which Sweeney is set to play Katrina Van Tassel.
The Right Project Will Have To Pull Sydney Sweeney Back To Television
There's no question at all that Sweeney's career is headed in a very exciting direction. Film is the name of the game, and there's every sign that this actor is leaning all in. The bittersweet thing here is that it means Euphoria season 3 will officially mark Sweeney's last TV appearance for the foreseeable future. Of course, as far as lasts go, Euphoria isn't a bad one. It brought Sweeney her breakout role, and it stands as one of HBO Max's most powerfully poignant and influential TV shows to date. Season 3 is almost a poetic sort of pause—not an end—to what has been an excellent period on television.
Question 1 of 3
Inevitably, Sweeney will be back on the small screen. That's almost always how it goes. Long gone are the days when it was expected for actors to pick a lane, and there's absolutely no reason Sweeney can't do both film and television. However, with so many big opportunities open to her, it makes sense that film would become the priority. Sweeney is tied to some really exciting projects that are all but guaranteed to draw a crowd, which means casting directors from across the industry are bound to maintain consistent interest.
In truth, a stint away from television makes Sweeney even more desirable on that landscape. Leaving things off with a prestige hit like Euphoria and following it up with a thrilling lineup of exciting films sets things up beautifully for a big return. Imagine, in a handful of years, a streamer or production company announcing that Sweeney is returning for her first TV role since Euphoria. No question, it's something to look forward to.
