Warning! This article contains MAJOR SPOILERS for VisionQuest episode 2.
Vibranium's MCU reputation is majorly at risk after VisionQuest showcased how the powerful metal alloy can be utterly obliterated. Early in the MCU's run, vibranium was mentioned as being a nearly unbreakable material when Steve Rogers is given a shield made of the material by Howard Stark.
For decades, vibranium continued to resist all sorts of stress, trauma, and damage from bullets, aliens, and superhuman rivals, proving that it was not a material to be taken lightly. Then, when Black Panther revealed the numerous other ways this material could be harnessed, as has been done in the Kingdom of Wakanda, vibranium took on an almost mythical reputation.
But, Avengers: Endgame did shatter those ideas when Thanos, wielding a blade forged with cosmic material known as uru, was able to cause enormous damage to Captain America's vibranium shield. But uru isn't accessible on Earth, and it largely seemed like nothing could stand to overthrow vibranium as the strongest resource on the planet. That is, of course, until now.
Paladin Causes Major Damage To Vision In VisionQuest With Adamantium Bullets
At the end of VisionQuest episode 2, Vision goes head-to-head with the bounty hunter known as Paladin. While Vision made short work of the dozens of other thugs at St. Mabyn's, the psychiatric institution from which he was recovering Thomas, Paladin manages to land a few good shots which not only cause Vision to stumble back, but they literally tear holes through his vibranium body.
Being forged of what was previously considered the most powerful material on Earth, this is a shocking moment, but when one of the AIs in Vision's mind reveals that Paladin is using adamantium bullets, it all becomes clear what exactly has happened. While Vision almost dies from the tremendous damage, they do find a way to push forward, but not without significant cost as JARVIS sacrifices himself to save the others.
Now, Vision needs to figure out how to fight back against a material that rivals the building blocks of his body, and in his weakened state, it could prove to be a challenge that he is unable to overcome. However, the introduction of adamantium suggests a much larger shift in the MCU ahead of the long-anticipated Mutant Saga in X-Men.
Adamantium Is Already Changing The Power Scale In The MCU Ahead Of X-Men
Adamantium is a material that is well known among fans of the X-Men. Largely due to the fact that Wolverine has a skeleton reinforced with adamantium, and three sharp blades of the stuff that emerge from each fist when Wolverine gets into a fight. There are also a handful of other characters who wield adamantium weapons and enhancements, largely from the Weapon X program that saw Logan transformed into a weapon himself.
When it comes to the MCU, adamantium is a much more recent addition to the lineup of materials. In fact, Captain America: Brave New World presents the first substantial introduction of adamantium, when they finally reveal that the body of the massive Celestial who was due to emerge from the Earth during the events of Eternals, is made of a material called adamantium.
Question 1 of 3
Part of the central conflict of that film revolves around the world's debates and dealings to get their hands on the resource, which they explicitly point to as being a material with greater potential than vibranium. However, until this moment, when Vision's previous imperviousness was finally put to the test, it was hard to believe anything could be stronger than vibranium.
Now that adamantium has proven its destructive power against vibranium, things aren't looking good as the world begins to make more tools with adamantium, and specifically weapons like the bullets used in VisionQuest. If adamantium continues to be weaponized like this, it seems as though there will be a lot more in danger of destruction than just Vision.
