Motac cracks down on unlicensed tourism operators in KL, issues 15 notices

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 15 — The Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (Motac) issued 15 inspection notices for various offences under the Tourism Industry Act 1992 (Act 482) during a two-day enforcement operation that began on Wednesday around Kuala Lumpur.

In a statement today, Motac said nine of the notices were issued under Subsection 5(2) for operating a tourism business without a valid licence.

“Three tourist locations, nine business premises and three individuals were inspected over the course of the operation.

“Intelligence work in collaboration with the Kuala Lumpur Tourist Guide Association (KLTGA) was also carried out to detect individuals suspected of carrying out tourist guide activities without valid licences. Enforcement action under Subsection 21(1) was taken against those found doing so,” the statement read.

The ministry said the operation also flagged other violations, including using private or unlicensed vehicles to ferry tourists, breaching licence conditions and doing business with unlicensed operators.

Private or unlicensed vehicles used for tourist transport that have been identified will be dealt with by the Land Public Transport Agency and Road Transport Department.

“Further investigations will be conducted before legal action is taken against individuals, entities, owners and other relevant parties involved,” the statement read.

Motac warned unlicensed parties not to offer tourism services, adding that offences under Act 482 are liable for compounds of up to RM250,000 or a fine of up to RM500,000, imprisonment of up to 10 years, or both, upon conviction.
