Police in Belleville, Ont., say they're investigating antisemitic flyers being distributed in the city less than two weeks after a gunman was killed attempting to attack a local synagogue on Yom Kippur.

The brief Thursday afternoon news release does not specify the content of the flyers, when they were distributed or precisely where, other than the city's east end.

That's the same area of Belleville where police say a gunman tried to attack the Sons of Jacob Synagogue with a significant amount of ammunition and unspecified combustible materials.

Sean Ward was fatally injured in a shootout with Belleville police Const. Jeff Smith and Const. Michael McCurdy, police Chief Murray Rodd said last week.

According to the chief, Smith was shot several times and will need to undergo multiple surgeries.

Belleville police said Thursday it remains in contact with community leaders and are being proactive to protect their safety, including continuing patrols around religious and other community spaces.

They're asking anyone with information about the flyers to contact them and say in general, anyone who witnesses a hate-motivated incident can call 911 in an emergency or 613-966-0882 otherwise.
