KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 11 — The RM1.1 billion allocation to enhance the operational capabilities of law enforcement agencies, including the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), reflects the government’s strong commitment to combating crime, including corruption, and strengthening national governance.

In a statement yesterday, the MACC described this as evidence of the government’s recognition of the importance of empowering enforcement agencies to prevent and eradicate crime, bring criminals to justice, and recover assets for the nation.

According to the MACC, the government’s emphasis on drafting the Government-Owned Entities Bill to tighten the governance of entities entrusted with managing public funds and assets reflects a commitment that goes beyond merely combating abuse of power to actively strengthening governance.

“This step is seen as capable of preventing major scandals such as 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB), Tabung Haji (TH), and the Federal Land Development Authority (Felda) from recurring,” the statement read.

The MACC stated that the government’s decision to strengthen governance and transparency in public financial management by reinvesting all loan repayment collections proves the government’s awareness of ensuring these funds reach the intended target groups without being misappropriated.

“The government’s decision to disclose project information, including contractors and contract values following the Government Procurement Act which will take effect next year, also reflects the government’s transparency in sharing information with the public,” according to the statement.

Meanwhile, the MACC supports the government’s initiative to study the establishment of the Law Reform Commission of Malaysia to identify outdated laws and existing legal gaps, in line with the need to update legal policies to close loopholes for crime.

The MACC is confident that with the strong support of the government and the rakyat, efforts to strengthen integrity, improve governance, and combat corruption can be further enhanced for the well-being of the public as a whole. — Bernama
