Tom Cruise breaks silence on fan theory that Digger is really a musical

Tom Cruise has broken his silence on a popular fan theory about his new movie Digger. The black comedy stars the actor as oil tycoon Digger Rockwell, who is on a mission to save humanity from a disaster he caused.

Following the release of the movie's trailer, writer Jason Pargin suggested that Digger is actually a musical, with the secret being "desperately" kept under wraps during its promotion.

The theory gained huge traction online, amassing 47 thousand likes on Twitter/X to date, and has been picked up by a number of news outlets.

While appearing on The Tonight Show, Cruise was asked to address the speculation by host Jimmy Fallon.

"I don't know if you saw these rumours on the internet. I just want to show them to you. You don't have to react, you can if you want to," Fallon said, sharing some article headlines, including a report from Digital Spy.

The actor seemed bemused by the idea and asked if it had been "trending" online, before promptly shutting down the theory.

"No, but I think it's a very good idea. I think we should do Digger: The Musical. Just Digger down," he said, dancing alongside Fallon.

While it may not contain any musical numbers, Digger does feature an impressive cast including the likes of Riz Ahmed, John Goodman, Sandra Hüller, Michael Stuhlbarg and Jesse Plemons.

The movie was directed and produced by Alejandro G Iñárritu, who also wrote the script alongside Alexander Dinelaris, Nicolás Giacobone and Sabina Berman, from a story by Jez Butterworth, Berman and Iñárritu.

Whether or not the characters will break into song and dance will remain a mystery until the movie is released next month.

Digger arrives in cinemas on 2 October.
