Floods hit Olongapo City as water beneath some bridges hit critical mark

SAN ANTONIO, Zambales — Several areas in Olongapo City were reported flooded on Friday night (Aug. 28) as water levels in the city’s rivers continued to rise.

Based on the monitoring of the city’s Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office at 6:30 p.m. water levels beneath the Del Rosario and Sta. Rita bridges reached 4 meters, classified as spilling level, while Kalaklan Bridge rose to 3.3 meters, or evacuation level.

Some village officials and response team are now conducting rescue operations as many residents reportedly stranded in several areas in the city.

Authorities continue to monitor the water levels and advised residents in low-lying and flood-prone areas to remain alert and follow evacuation advisories.

In Subic Bay Freeport, the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority Law Enforcement Division (LED) also reported that 10-13 Road near Kalayaan Gate leading to Tracer Base was impassable to all vehicle types.

Several flooded roads including portions of Bravo Fence, San Bernardino Road, Labitan Street, and Quezon Avenue are also not passable to light vehicles.

Dewey Avenue near San Roque Chapel remained passable to light vehicles despite flooding.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration maintained its heavy rainfall outlook for Zambales.

In its latest forecast, 100 to 200 millimeters of rain is expected in Zambales from Friday to Sunday, Aug. 30 with rainfall potentially higher in mountainous and elevated areas. /gsg
