There are, I think we can all agree, way too many video games these days. I'm not sure how we're supposed to keep on top of them all. The good news is that one of 2020's most slept-on video games is free to check out on PlayStation Plus right now, and I'd urge you to get on it.

There are few feelings worse than playing a great video game and knowing it won't get the love it deserves. There are those of us who have been banging the drum for this game for years, but the most surprising thing is that we ever had to in the first place.

Marvel's Midnight Suns Is The Most Underrated Game Of The Decade

It deserved so much more

Quite how Marvel's Midnight Suns managed to fly under everyone's radar is beyond me. A Marvel game starring Spider-Man, Wolverine, Ghost Rider, Iron Man, and pretty much every big face from the comics and movies should have been a sure-fire hit. Firaxis Games took everything that people loved about XCOM, and merged it with an original story about Marvel characters. How was that not a winner?

"Developer Firaxis Games has honed its craft in the genre over successive XCOM titles, and the results of this new card-based twist do much to redeem the stale story," we wrote in our review at the time.

"Departing from the genre's tried and tested action-adventure gameplay, Midnight Suns instead takes a turn-based approach, allowing players to assemble up to three heroes at a time to take on intricately arranged scenarios that can easily end in failure if they don't play their cards right. The chess-like nature of these encounters makes for a refreshing change of pace compared to the likes of Batman: Arkham, Marvel's Spider-Man, or Gotham Knights, and all the heroes get their own beautifully animated moves to dismantle Lilith's forces with."

Over on Metacritic, Marvel's Midnight Suns has a very respectable score of 83. To me, it's a genuine 10/10 superhero RPG that achieves exactly what it sets out to do. This is a game packed with engaging combat, sharp writing, and some really sweet character moments from some of your favorite heroes (and a batch of potentially obscure ones). The good news is you can go and check it out for yourself right now. While Marvel's Midnight Suns isn't fully available via Xbox Game Pass or PlayStation Plus (which I really don't understand), there is a free trial available for PlayStation Plus Premium subscribers. This trial gets you access to the first two hours of the game, which will give you an excellent feel for the flow of the game's story, characters, and tactical combat. If you even slightly dig what you play in those opening hours, believe me when I say it only gets better. So, so much better.

If you have a PlayStation Plus subscription and any interest at all in Marvel, I would urge you to check out Marvel's Midnight Suns. It's one of the best games you've never played, and I truly believe it deserved so much better.
