Case cracked: Police find thousands of eggs smuggled from PA territory with fake stamps

Israel Police seized over 76,000 eggs that had been fraudulently stamped as originating in Israeli markets and sorting sites, with their actual source being the Palestinian Authority, the police announced on Thursday.

The eggs were found in a truck which had been stopped at the border crossing between Palestinian Authority territory and Jerusalem.

Inside the truck were eight pallets on which were 2,560 cartons of eggs - approximately 76,800 eggs in total, the police said.

The police confiscated the truck and destroyed all the eggs.

Agriculture and Food Security Ministry investigation unit steps up operations

"When tens of thousands of eggs enter Israel bearing stamps suspected of being forged, the objective is clear: to present a product to the consumer as if it had undergone all the required inspections and oversight," Head of the Central Enforcement and Investigation Unit (Pitzuach) at the Agriculture and Food Security Ministry, Moshe Achrak, said.

"In this instance, we intercepted the shipment before it reached store shelves."

Achrak added that Pitzuach had stepped up its operations to prevent unregulated food from reaching the public during the holiday season.
