Could Jayden Daniels' Cautious Play Hurt Washington Commanders? Kurt Warner And Dan Quinn Weigh In

Jayden Daniels earned his reputation as a rookie by attacking defenses with throws most quarterbacks would pass on. This season, Hall of Famer Kurt Warner believes the Washington Commanders star is looking for the exit too soon. After studying Daniels in the loss to the San Francisco 49ers, Warner shared his view with Ben Standig, and head coach Dan Quinn later called it a fair read. At 1-4-1, Washington needs its quarterback to trust his arm again, and the next few weeks will show whether that happens.
Kurt Warner Breaks Down Jayden Daniels' Film
Warner spent his own career running the high-powered Rams offense, so he knows how a quarterback's body gives away intent. His concern with Daniels has little to do with accuracy. It comes down to where the eyes go during the drop.
"It's watching the head and the body language of a player. And so if you watch the video, that's what you see. It's almost when he (Daniels) gets to the top of his drop, his eyes have already dropped looking for a checkdown."
Defensive backs study that kind of habit on film all week. When a quarterback looks short before the play fully develops, safeties can sit on underneath routes and take away the middle of the field.

Daniels' season totals fit that picture. He is averaging 6.5 yards per attempt and 10.1 per completion, both career lows, and he goes to his first read 55.9 percent of the time. Warner still sees a special talent, which is why he wants the rookie-year attitude back.
Dan Quinn Wants Jayden Daniels To Attack Coverage For The Washington Commanders
Quinn addressed the criticism at his Monday press conference. He did not dispute it, though he limited it to certain games.
"I think in certain games it is accurate to (say) that. That's kind of the blessing and the curse: when do I scramble? When do I move out? When do I go? So I think those are fair comparisons. When you see a window, hey man, this is the time to go let it rip."
Quinn also praised Daniels' ball placement, especially on deep shots, so the coach sees a decision problem rather than a skill problem. Daniels is learning an under-center offense under first-year coordinator David Blough while playing behind a patched line without Laremy Tunsil. Terry McLaurin's season-ending knee injury removes his top receiver as well.
Quinn plans scheme adjustments instead of personnel moves. More play-action would help, since Daniels has lined up under center on just 27 percent of snaps. Chig Okonkwo, Rachaad White and Stefon Diggs could also give him easier completions and more yards after the catch, which currently sits at 4.4 per reception.
