The creator of Netflix's Vikings replacement series shares a disappointing update about the next season's production. Vikings captivated audiences worldwide with its gritty take on Ragnar Lothbrok's rise, with detailed period production and breathtaking landscapes and its slow-burn exploration of the religious friction between Christian and pagan cultures. Vikings expanded its reach past traditional history buffs, cultivated a massive global fanbase, and spawned the successful sequel series Vikings: Valhalla.

Vikings has officially ended with season 6 of the main show and season 3 of its sequel Vikings: Valhalla. However, there are plenty of similar series with a similar approach to real historical eras. The Last Kingdom is an ideal companion piece that tracks the birth of England, and Rome delivers a lavish look at the fall of the Roman Republic. Other shows like Spartacus, Knightfall, and Barbarians focus on epic conflicts, and others like Marco Polo, Shōgun, and Outlander focus on major shifts in the history of different cultures.

Every single historical era has been explored by at least one major television or streaming production. Besides Vikings, the Viking Age is also at the center of another popular series that hasn't officially concluded yet.

Makoto Yukimura Confirms Vinland Saga Season 3 Isn't Moving Forward

Vinland Saga Season 3 Has Been Put On Indefinite Hold

Vinland Saga currently sits in an uncertain limbo. Despite the source manga having completed its long serialization run, creator Makoto Yukimura recently dashed immediate hopes with a response to a concerned fan on X, stating, "Sorry my friend, I have no good news about that. The project is not currently in progress". Although the completed chapters provide more than enough material to adapt the upcoming Baltic Sea arc, Vinland Saga season 3 will take a while to be released.

Production gaps between previous Vinland Saga installments have had extensive wait times. The initial broadcast aired in 2019 via Wit Studio, followed by a four-year hiatus before the second season premiered in 2023 under MAPPA. Industry schedules suggest that even if a renewal arrives soon, complex animation requirements and key staff commitments mean a potential third season would likely take multiple years of careful development before hitting television screens. Unfortunately, it seems like Vinland Saga season 3 won't arrive anytime soon; but on the bright side, the long wait doesn't mean a formal cancellation is likely.
