Landman has proven to be an unprecedented hit, even by Taylor Sheridan’s standards, and when a show is this big in the streaming age, the powers that be can’t wait to spin it off. It’s no longer good enough to just keep a successful show on the air for as many seasons as the story will sustain. Now, it’ll keep going for another couple of seasons after that, and then it’ll get spun off into sequels, prequels, and sidequels. The Boys, The Mandalorian, Reacher, even Sheridan’s own Yellowstone — every smash hit in the streaming era is a cinematic universe waiting to happen.

Right now, Landman doesn’t have any spinoffs. It’s just the one show, it’s been on for two seasons, and it’s been renewed for a third season that’s been delayed by a few months. But if the gaps between seasons of Landman are getting longer, then we need a spinoff more than ever. A Landman spinoff could act as a sort of Winter Olympics in between seasons of the main show.

Sheridan has already laid out the perfect roadmap to expand Landman into a larger universe. His various Yellowstone spinoffs have dug into the family history, and Landman’s spinoffs could do the same thing.

Landman Should Follow The Yellowstone Template For Franchise Expansion

When Yellowstone became a massive ratings hit, reinvigorating Kevin Costner’s career and making Paramount+ a serious player in the streaming world, Paramount sunk its hooks into the Yellowstone multiverse and refused to let go. Yellowstone has been spun off into 1883, 1923, Marshals, and Dutton Ranch, exploring the past, present, and future of the Dutton family. Now, Sheridan is spinning off Samuel L. Jackson’s Tulsa King character into a show called Frisco King, and spinoffs from Lioness and The Madison and Mayor of Kingstown could be next. Maybe Lawmen could be adapted into an anthology format, chronicling the lives of other historical lawmen.

Landman is primed for the spinoff treatment, not only because it’s successful enough to sustain them, but because it has plenty of characters and storylines that are worthy of being fleshed out in their own shows. Just like Yellowstone has gone into the past to explore John Dutton’s history, Landman should do the same with Tommy’s origins.

Throughout the last two seasons, Landman has hinted at Tommy’s tragic childhood, and his family history of abuse and addiction and mental illness. Now that his son is engaged to a widowed single mother, the next generation of the Norris family legacy is secured, too, so there’s room for a spinoff in either direction of the timeline.

Which Landman Characters Could Sustain Spinoffs In The Show's Present?

There are a few Landman characters that could support their own spinoff. Sheridan could do a Succession-style boardroom drama about Cami taking over her late husband’s business and winning over his skeptical shareholders. Cami got a much bigger role in season 2, and became a much more substantial character, and we know Demi Moore can carry a starring vehicle.

Alternatively, Sheridan could do a Landman prequel. A show exploring T.L.’s early career alongside Tommy’s traumatic childhood could look at a bygone era of the oil industry while providing some extra context on Tommy’s tragic backstory. A show exploring Tommy and Angela’s first marriage could shed some more light on Cooper and Ainsley’s childhood, and the obvious favoritism toward the latter that made Cooper resent his parents.

Cooper and Ariana don’t have a strong enough relationship to carry a whole show (they’re the worst part of the current show), but a comedy about Tommy’s friends bumbling around the oil fields would be a ton of fun. Landman is primed for a spinoff; Sheridan just has to take his pick.
