Netflix's Narnia Reboot Debuts First Official Teaser

A cinematic obsessive with the filmic palate of a starving raccoon, Rob London will watch pretty much anything once. With a mind like a steel trap, he's an endless fount of movie and TV trivia, borne from a misspent youth of watching monster movies on TV, perusing the sun-faded goods at the local video rental shop, and staining his fingers with ink from the Video Movie Guide. Areas of interest include science fiction, film noir, horror flicks, '70s disaster pictures, Bond movies, '90s action, giant robots, dinosaurs, super heroes, and the exuberantly schlocky output of Cannon Films. He also enjoys both Star Trek and Star Wars when they're good, and maybe even more when they're bad. As a Canadian, he also has a vested interest in Canadian movies and TV shows, especially the cheesier ones dubbed "Canuxploitation."

An expert on Marvel Comics, he has also written for the Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe, and is a member of the Marvel Research Team. He can frequently be found pontificating on comic-book continuity or bemoaning the misfortunes of the Toronto Maple Leafs on his Twitter account.

The world of Narnia is set to come to life once more on the big screen early next year. Greta Gerwig, in her first film since Barbie dominated the 2023 box office, is returning to the beginning of C.S. Lewis' beloved fantasy epic, and now we have our first, fleeting glimpse. It will have to do until Narnia: The Magician's Nephew premieres in theaters next year.

The Magician's Nephew was the sixth book Lewis wrote in his seven-book Chronicles of Narnia series, first hitting stores in 1955; however, it serves as a prequel to the series, and thus takes place first chronologically. It's a break from previous adaptations of the books: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe was the first one published and remains the most famous, and has been adapted in live-action and animation several times. Conversely, The Magician's Nephew has never been adapted for the screen.

In a new post on social media, Netflix revealed the film's colorful logo; the sparkling title card is prominently emblazoned with "A Film by Greta Gerwig," capitalizing on the director's critical and commercial popularity; that's also what prompted the streamer to overcome its seemingly ironclad aversion to theaters by giving the film a wide theatrical release, nearly two months before it will debut on Netflix. The post was also accompanied by a still of Gerwig at work behind the camera, shooting in a bleak-looking British location. Any shots of Narnia will have to wait until the film's February 12, 2027 theatrical release date nears; it will then stream exclusively on Netflix on March 4.
